As a child of parents with dual sensory losses, vision and hearing loss, Dr. Abby Ryan has a lifetime of personal experience with hearing loss, hearing aids, and the hardships faced by those with multiple impairments.
Interested in what caused her mother’s sudden sensorineural hearing loss, Dr. Ryan took courses on communication disorders and audiology. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in communication disorders from the University of Alabama and her Doctorate of Audiology (Au.D.) from Auburn University. Dr. Ryan completed her clinical fellowship year with the UAB Civitan-Sparks Clinics. These clinics are part of the Civitan International Research Center, whose mission is to provide education, research, and services on developmental disabilities. During this time, she presented her research on the choice of musical instrument and its effects on auditory working memory and perception in adolescents at the Civitan International/Simpson-Ramsey Neurodevelopmental Symposium.
Dr. Ryan specializes in adult and pediatric diagnostic evaluations and has special interests in hearing aids, cochlear implants, aural rehabilitation, and vestibular testing.
A native of Birmingham, she is a regular at the Christmas Village; enjoys playing musical instruments; attending concerts and musicals; trying new restaurants; and enjoying the outdoors with her husband, Boston terrier, and brand-new baby girl.
